State Historic Preservation Office
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) evaluates, protects and promotes Michigan’s historic built environment and archaeological sites. We lead this effort by helping property owners, developers, and local and state agencies identify and seize opportunities to celebrate and rehabilitate historic places that define local communities and make our state uniquely Michigan.
SHPO staff work in a hybrid environment and are most easily accessible by direct email. Looking to do research? As of February 27, 2025 our process has changed as we begin to allow users to access our new online CRIS database. Section 106 applications may be submitted electronically. General inquiries may be sent to [email protected]. We invite you to explore our Programs and Services below to learn more about historic preservation in Michigan.
Mid Michigan Public Workshop
What do you think about historic preservation opportunities in Michigan? What threats do historic places face, and where can historic preservation champions focus their attention and resources in the future? A series of regional public workshops will take place across Michigan during summer 2025 to allow citizens an opportunity to offer their ideas and input. We invite you to join us in Mt. Pleasant on Thursday, July 17 at the Ziibiwing Center for our Mid Michigan Public Workshop.
Registration is optional but will help us plan refreshments. Walk in participation is also welcome. Click the link for workshop details and to register.
Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program (MLAP) Grants Impact
Since the MLAP was established in 2000, the SHPO has awarded matching grants annually to promote the preservation of these historic maritime icons. Grant funds are made available from the revenue generated by the sales of the Save Our Lights fundraising license plate. This map shows a complete list of all program grant recipients.
