Celebrating 10 Years of Collaborative Placemaking in Michigan
Supporting the vibrancy of our communities and places across Michigan is a key pillar in the state’s Make It in Michigan economic development strategy, which focuses on People, Places, and Projects. 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of Public Spaces Community Places (PSCP), a grant match program that utilizes donation-based crowdfunding to generate public interest and funding to revitalize or create public spaces.

The “Drill Shop” in Calumet was originally built in 1885 as a manufacturing facility for drilling equipment. The building sat vacant for nearly 40 years before it was renovated by the Copper Country Curling Club. The club partnered with Patronicity to launch a community crowdfunding campaign supported by matching funds through MEDC’s Public Spaces, Community Places program.
Public Spaces Community Places is a grant match program that utilizes donation-based crowdfunding to generate public interest and funding to revitalize or create public spaces. Communities, nonprofits, and municipalities can submit projects by applying for a Patronicity crowdgranting campaign. Crowdgranting utilizes web-based donations, so projects are accessible to anyone willing to donate in real-time.
In 2024, PSCP celebrated 10 years of creating new public spaces. To honor this milestone, the MEDC, along with the Michigan Municipal League and Patronicity, toured Michigan to visit groundbreaking public spaces supported by the program. Along the way, they met passionate changemakers and placemakers, explored dynamic public spaces, and were inspired by the program's lasting impact.
