Archaeology Projects in Michigan

Archaeological investigations take place in Michigan every year. Several of these projects are archaeological field schools aimed at teaching excavation techniques to college students, but others allow a first-hand look for the general public to see archaeologists at work. There are excavations going on every summer at Fort Michilimackinac. Western Michigan University holds an annual open house at their Fort St. Joseph project, and the Campus Archaeology Program as regularly "on call" at Michigan State University when summer projects disturb the ground. Use the external links below to learn more about these ongoing projects.

  • Mackinac Island State Park Commission: Fort Michilimackinac
  • Michigan State University: MSU Campus Archaeology Program
  • Michigan Technological University: Industrial Archaeology Field School
  • NOAA Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve
  • University of Michigan-Dearborn: River Raisin Archaeology Project
  • Western Michigan University: Fort Saint Joseph
  • Michigan Archaeological Society: Michigan's non-profit association of professional and amateur archaeologists.
