About the State Archaeologist
Michigan's State Archaeologist is on the staff of the State Historic Preservation Office. The State Archaeologist records, investigates, interprets and protects Michigan's archaeological sites, and maintains the official database of recorded archaeological sites located both on land and underwater. The State Archaeologist is responsible for archaeology on state land and collaborates with the Department of Natural Resources on exhibits and educational programs, and curates archaeological collections obtained from state land as well as collections generated by review and compliance projects across the state.
